The UNTOLD Story of that 2 Pilots — Who died in Ahmadabad aircraft crash
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was just days away from retirement. After decades in the skies, he was preparing to hang up his wings.
First Officer Clive Kunder, on the other hand, had only just begun his aviation journey. Young, eager, and full of dreams, he had taken his seat in the cockpit with pride.
Both pilots were at the controls of the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on Thursday, flying from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick Airport.
The flight carried 230 passengers and 10 crew members. It was a routine international route—until it wasn’t.
Moments after takeoff, disaster struck. The Dreamliner crashed near Ahmedabad, killing 241 people. Only one survived.
Captain Sabharwal had logged 8,200 flight hours in his career. Kunder had far fewer, but both shared the same passion for the skies.
In that cockpit were two lives—one preparing to say goodbye to flying, another just saying hello.
Their stories ended together, in the same tragic moment, in the same broken aircraft.
A veteran. A rookie. Two dreams. One crash.
CAPTAIN SABHARWAL Was About to Leave His Job
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was known for his calm demeanor and professionalism. He was highly respected in the aviation community.
He lived in Mumbai’s Powai area, part of a family deeply rooted in aviation.
His father, a former DGCA official, and two cousins—also pilots—inspired his journey into the skies.
Just days before the crash, Sabharwal made a heartfelt decision.
He told his 82-year-old ailing father that he would soon quit flying to care for him full-time.
It was meant to be his final chapter in the cockpit. But fate had other plans.
